UPDATED! Blagojevich, Topinka debate possibilities fall through
BY THE SOUTHERN
Monday, October 9, 2006 12:11 PM CDT
Gov. Rod Blagojevich cut off negotiations for debates with GOP challenger Judt Baar Topinka this morning.

Blagojevich on Friday invited Topinka to debate Friday in Chicago and Sunday in Southern Illinois. He gave her until 10 a.m. today to decide.

Topinka responded by saying she would one of Rod Blagojevich's debate invitations if he accepted one of hers. Topinka wanted the second debate to be Oct. 30 or Oct. 31 in Chicago or Springfield.

“I’m very disappointed that Treasurer Topinka has chosen not to debate," Blagojevich spokesperson Shelia Nix aid in a statement this morning. "We offered the Treasurer numerous chances to engage in debates across the state to address issues important to the working families of Illinois. Instead, Topinka and her campaign stalled, delayed, and pointed fingers."

Topinka and Blagojevich had accepted Sept. 5 and Sept. 26 debate dates at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center earlier this year. Both dates fell through because of scheduling conflicts with the candidates.

" We'd better get used to this ... debates "falling through," promises "falling through" ... Southern Illinois will "fall through" in Blago's next term, just like his last, at least until it becomes politically advantageous for him to remember we exist down here. "

" Thank you for not wasting our time Topinka and Blagojevich! I'll just vote for Rich Whitney who appears to be the only serious candidate. You two are making my decision SO much easier! "

" scheduling conflicts my butt! neither of those two candidates could give a flying kite about us in southern illinois. our votes don't count to them. i know everyone says that i'm going to be throwing my vote away, but i'm going voting for rich whitney because it seems like he may actually care about this region. everyone else just has their noses stuck up chicago's "money chute."
