UPDATED: Governor, Topinka campaign in Southern Illinois
BY THE SOUTHERN
Monday, November 6, 2006 3:39 PM CST
Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Republican State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka flew into Southern Illinois today for their last campaign stops in the region.

The governor came to Williamson County Regional Airport amid a light rain and told supporters he should be re-elected so he could "keep fighting for Southern Illinois."

Topinka told a crowd at Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro that she feels momentum turning her way on the eve of the election. "We are on the verge of the upset of the year," she said.

A Springfield newspaper reported last week that Topinka had pulled within four points of the governor in its poll, a statistical dead heat, considering the poll's margin of error.

Meanwhile, the governor and treasurer had a humorous exchange about the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

During a campaign stop in Bloomington, Topinka said: “Maybe he (Blagojevich) ought to run for manager of the Cubs. They’re a bunch of losers too.”

Blagojevich responded: “I don’t mind if she attacks me – that’s up to Treasurer Topinka. But Treasurer Topinka should leave the Cubs alone."

" Something's seriously wrong with that Topinka woman. Can she not put a cork in the nastiness for just one day? Hopefully the polls are correct and we won't have to ever deal with such a loose cannon for Governor. All of us in Illinois would become national laughingstocks. "

" Did I read his quote correctly when Rod said re-elect his so he can keep fighting for southern Illinois? I must have slept through the last 4 years because I can't remember the first fight that he allegedly made for us. Rest assured though, IF he gets re-elected, this will be the last we hear or see of him. "

" Good news and bad news. The good news is that we won't see the Gov. until the next election. The bad news, the 'free money' has come to an end. "

" Although I agree with Judy Bar Topinka that the Cubs at least stink, I don't believe it was a smart comment for her to make this close to election. I am sure she is not really concerned about the Chicago area vote, however there are still a lot of Southern Illinois Cubies. I'm just thankful I am not one!!!! "
