" Im a former S Illinois resident thats lived in Europe for a while. Back in the old days there were trains everywhere. You could jump on a train at Tamaroa or Scheller, and go to Mt Vernon, then change trains and go to St Louis and from there anywhere coast to coast. There were thousands of people just working for the railroads,in places like Centralia and Carbondale. Those people had money to spend in stores and resturants and othe places of business. Its a shame that all that is gone now. Its a shame that you can't take a train from Carbondale to St Louis without going over Chicago. The whole infrastructure is dead. Why take a train when you can fly? How many times have the regional airlines changed airports, from Cabondale to Marion to Mt Vernon? They built a big airport right there at Scott AFB and what happened? I live in Europe, and things aren't that easy over here economy wise, but I can walk 2oo ft to a bus stop in a dinky German town, get off at a train station, maybe make 3 changes and be in Paris in a few hours.Or Brussels, or Rome or Amsterdam or even London. We sold our souls when to Detroit and lost the net that really built and held America together, the railroads. Maybe we can rebuild them. When gas goes up to 5 dollars a gallon, it might be worth it. " With $24M of Illinois Tax-Payer Dollars and additional funds kicked-in from the Feds, AMTRAK should be able to run trains! At that price, it would be cheaper to purchase EACH rider their own car... We could pay them NOT to ride the train and be better off financially... Typical governmental leftist attitude... If it doesn't work economically, but helps a relatively small number of people, throw more money at it. What benefit does the state of Illinois get for this $24M investment? Make the train operate self-sufficiently or stop running it! "

" Great idea. The Lautenberg-Lott bill is a great next step for federal investment in passenger rail. It would also be good to get Missouri representatives on board as well. "
