Herrin hires first female firefighter

HERRIN - Thadra Ladd is set to make Herrin history, but if you ask her, she's just landing a job that she's grateful to have.

Ladd was hired at Monday night's city council meeting as Herrin's first full-time female firefighter, a goal she's been working toward for months.

Although Ladd is the first woman to don Herrin fire gear, she said she doesn't consider herself a trailblazer.

"I really just want to be seen as a firefighter and not the first female firefighter," Ladd said. "I've been a little intimidated by the whole newspaper thing, because there are a lot of hard-working guys that deserve a lot of credit."

Herrin Fire Chief Mike Steh said Ladd has already proved herself a worthy firefighter.

"She's been a paid, on-call member for over a year now, and she's done an excellent job," Steh said. "I believe things will work out just fine. She really fits in with the other guys."

Ladd said she has always been interested in becoming a firefighter, and began actively training for the goal over the last year.

"I've always worked out on a regular basis, but I did switch my workout and really start focusing on some of the more fire-specific tasks in the last year," Ladd said.

Trailblazer or not, Ladd said she just feels honored to wear the suit and serve her city.

"I'm very excited," Ladd said. "I really look forward to representing the city of Herrin."

" CONGRATS Thadra Ladd!!! This po dunk area keeps educated working women down. They want to keep firemen/policemen just as that MEN!! Keep up the good work!! OH! and to a Matter of Time you really make no sence I work in a office and hold the same position as men... so I really do not understand your point. Seems as if you think less of women in the work force, we all deserve the SAME opportunity. "

" To "ex firefighter" & "matter of time"...I know for a fact that this female passed her physical tesy under the male standards just to show she could...she is also physically in much better shape than several of the current men, some of who get winded by walking across the bay...she is also no prude & understands & accepts the dynamics of working with & around men...she would as soon give it right back to them as sue them...Herrin should be proud to have someone of her calibur, character, and determination...how dare any of you who are not familiar with her presume to know her physical strength or her character... "

" I fully back anyone who wants to achieve a goal in their life, good for them. I do however have to say this. I think that the physical testing procedure for women in this type of work should be no different than it is for the men. Who is to say that someone is going to weigh less just because a female fire fighter is the one rescuing you? That is the reason I say this. Call me what you want, 200 lbs is 200 lbs, it makes no difference what sex the person is thats trying to lift it. "

" Congrats to you girl. Just show them we women can do everthing them men can do. "

" It's only a matter of time before Herrin gets their first sexual harassment law suit. Firemen are known for their joking ways and it won't take her too long to find their 'joking ways' to be offensive. I'm sure she won't have any trouble finding a sleazeball lawyer to represent her, either. "
