Fernando Treviño, 57, has been selected as new chancellor of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, another accolade in a long and diverse career.

International roots: He grew up in Mexico and claims Eagle Pass, Texas, as his home.

Current title: Professor of the School of Public Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. He served as founding dean of the school from 1999 until this year.

Past experience: Professor and chairman of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at University of North Texas Health Science Center, 1996-2000; dean of Southwest Texas State’s School of Health Professions, 1991-93; director, Center for Cross-Cultural Research, and associate professor of preventive medicine and community health at the University of Texas’ Galveston medical branch, 1986-91; senior scientist, American Medical Association, 1984-86; social science analyst, National Center for Health Statistics, 1980-84.

Accolades: Received a commendation from former President Bill Clinton in 1995 for his efforts in health-care reform; and an executive director’s citation from American Public Health Association in 1998.

Involvement: Past president of World Federation of Public Health Associations, based in Geneva; executive director, American Public Health Association from 1993-96; past executive editor of American Journal of Public Health.

Degrees: Doctorate, preventive medicine and community health, University of Texas’ Galveston medical branch, 1979; master’s degree, health services administration, University of Texas, 1975; bachelor’s of science, psychology, University of Houston, 1971.

Military service: Reached rank of captain in U.S. Army Medical Services Corps before being honorably discharged on Dec. 21, 1979. Served as training officer and instructor at U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences in San Antonio and the U.S. Army Medical Training Center in Houston.
