Gathering ends without incident
By Adam Testa,. The Southern
Monday, August 13, 2007 9:54 AM CDT
CAVE-IN-ROCK - After four days of music and excitement, The Gathering has come to an end.

The four-day concert, hosted by the Insane Clown Posse and its record label Psychopathic Records, brought about 6,000 fans to the event in Southern Illinois.

Hardin County Sheriff Tom Seiner said a few more arrests had been made by Sunday, mostly minor drug charges involving marijuana. One man was arrested on two felony charges of possession of Ecstasy with intent to sell.

Tenable Protective Services, based out of Cleveland, provided internal security at the event taking place on private property near Cave-in-Rock.

Carl Poghen, spokesman for TPS, said the event went over smoothly and things were even "a little quieter than usual."

"Today's our big day, and we're kicking it," he said on Sunday. The concert began Thursday and culminated Sunday with a performance by ICP.

Poghen said a few arrests had been made by local police, but no major incidents occurred at the event. With extremely hot weather, some people were taken to local hospitals for heat exhaustion, and many others were treated on site, he said.

The security company, as well as event planners, enjoyed having the event in Southern Illinois, Poghen said.

"The owners of the property have been phenomenal, and the neighbors have been helpful to the kids," he said. "If the people want us back, we'd be glad to come back."

" No incidents? A Juggalo died, a BROTHER of mine died, because YOUR HOSPITAL decided to release him early. Don't tell me there were no incidents when my family weaps for a loved one whom passed. "

" This is funny as hell to me. You are all upset because there was no riots or major crimes so now yall gotta find something else to complain about. Ask any business owner in the area hell you can even ask most of the cops there is nothing wrong with us. i am so sorry that your little hate mongering church group was totally wrong about us. Maybe next time you should tell that pastor not to pervert the word of God just to match what he thinks the world should be about. "

" We were trying to tell you it would not be 20,000 people. We tried telling you 7,000 tops. We tried telling you you didnt need that much police force, now your in debt. "

" oh come on! Say what you are really feeling. Nothing terrible happened! Everyone of you that were against "The Gathering" are just angry because nothing went wrong. You were all hoping that some murders would be commited so you could whine some more. Go take it elsewhere. "

" Well, after all of this hullabaloo, I'm wondering if some neighboring counties might wanna consider restricting Hardin County people from visiting. Some of them sound like they feel threatened by anyone not dressing just like themselves. This is such a fine example of how Southern Illinois promotes tourism. "

" OK, if I want to join the military, that's what I will do. And that is what hardin co felt like the entire weekend, the U.S. military. What kind of statement does that make? The ONLY reason there were no OTHER problems besides the hundreds of drug arrests and vandalism and property rights violations is because the presence of so many troopers. IT was something this county has never before seen. And to the lovely person who said we have a meth problem, yes, there is no denying that, but what of YOUR group, with hundres and hundres of DRUG arrests? Don't sit all smug because all the troopers kept you out of our way, you have serious issues. And, why couldn;t the news get out there on private property? What were you hiding when you sound so proud? I will lead the charges against you guys ever coming back here. And, only 6,000? I thought you said 20,000 and you were a world renowned band? What happened there? My brother's cover band can draw more than that on a weeknight. "

Without Incident wrote on Aug 13, 2007 8:14 PM:

" Without incident? 400 tickets issued for various infractions of the law is an event hardly without incident. And that was just off grounds. Officers were denied access on grounds unless something had broken out that even the private property owner could not handle. He could handle allowing free and open use of illegal drugs. That's his kind of entertainment venue. After all, it brings in lots of bucks. It is obvious that things would have gotten much worse had the state police and county officers not been prepared to control it. "

Minor Drug Arrests? wrote on Aug 13, 2007 8:07 PM:

" What is a minor drug arrest? The arrests that took place were not on the concert grounds. Those happened on the way into the grounds. Stupidity was the reason those people were arrested. Drug use was rampid on the grounds. Is that okay? Is any drug use acceptable? Minor arrests? So it's okay to break some "minor" laws? People are so complacent anymore. "

" Glad things went as good as they did. I hadn't seen such an overreaction since Y2K. and yes I do agree with Woody about the METH problem in the area. If there is another event let's have a better band, and the man making all this money from the event pay his share to the county. Just not the kids busted for traffic offenses, and pot busts. "

" So, all that outrage and hysteria was for nothing, I guess? Maybe it would be appropriate at this point to say something about judging not, but hopefully the insane protest posse will have learned to be a little less quick on the draw when it comes to labels. "

" After reading this story, and then the reader comments on the original story, it appears many of the "locals" there are greatly exagerrating the "alleged" mayhem that they say went on. One comment even stated that the youth from the Levee Pond Church had armed themselves. Maybe the police should have checked on that. "
