Marion council seat still empty

MARION - In a special meeting of the Marion City Council, the mayor and the commissioners revealed their picks to fill the fifth commissioner spot but hit an impasse.

The special meeting was called after a failure to pick a new city commissioner to replace Bob Boyt at last Monday's city council meeting. While they all agreed they wanted to fill the position, they couldn't agree on who would fill it. Mayor Bob Butler and Jay Rix agreed that the best man for the job was John Goss, a retired appliance dealer who spent about 25 years with the Williamson County Building Commission.

"He knows the community as well, if not better than any of the other (candidates)," Butler said.

Robert "Dog" Connell and Lannie Gribble, however, leaned toward Bob Owens, who lost the race for commissioner to the five incumbents in the last election. Connell said Owens is "entitled" to the position because he knew he wouldn't have much of a chance against five incumbents and ran anyway and is planning to run again, showing a concern for the community.

Gribble suggested that if they could not agree on those two candidates, they should look at someone else. However, Butler and Rix were steadfast in their belief that Goss is the only man for the job. With Butler and Rix only willing to vote for Goss and Connell and Gribble not willing to vote for him, the council agreed that there could be no agreement and motioned to adjourn.

Butler said they could continue as a four-man team until the next city election in spring 2009, if need be. Connell, however, said that if they only operate with a four-man team, he will not make or second any motions, saying that with no tiebreaker, the council cannot function. When Mayor Butler made a motion to adjourn, Connell refused to second it.

"I can be just as stubborn as he can," Connell said after the meeting.

" Hey Hang Tough, Lannie and Dog are part the same stale leadership that you referred to. An aldermatic form of government will not solve anything in Marion. Marion needs to seriously consider hiring a city manager. This will get rid of all the patronage and nepotism that has been abound in Marion for years. "

" How Sad, the council was given an option on a conservative democrate in Rinella, but there is no way that republican board is going to do that. That might break up all the patronage and nepotism thats been going on for all these years. We need to get away from the republican and democrate scheme and worry about what's best for Marion and its citizens. Also, don't be fooled by Gribble and Connell on their stand firm approach. They have their own little agenda's and just want a pawn to go their way. Behold the Ides of March when it comes to those two. "

" The City Council should allow people with a real pulse on reality to serve on the board. Take a person mentioned in Sunday's paper, Greg Triplett; he has served many years as a business manager and also served for years on the Williamson County Tourism Board, all the while living in the area and facing the day to day real life issues of working and raising his two children enrolled in the Marion Public School system. What is the council looking for in qualified; should it not be someone that has the vision to perform and seek improvement, yet really understand what the common man and woman is facing. Think about? "

Power to the People wrote on Sep 24, 2007 2:30 PM:

" The power of Marion government needs to be returned to the people. Mayor Butler says "the people have spoken by electing us." The problem is once elected he (Butler) has the power (i.e. Karco)- not the people. I agree that Marion needs to change to Aldermen-form of government, giving equal representation to all city areas. This could be voted on (by the people) at the next election. How about it Marion.... Power to the People or forfeiting power - to those that abuse it. "

" I am embarrassed to be a Marion resident. It is all about egos. Why not pick a conservative Democrat. Why does it have to be a Republican? The city of Marion is going to lose due to a stale mate on votes, This is not good and is looking more and more like the WIlliamson County Housing Authority. Good Grief! "

" Good idea, Surprised. We ought to try to bring city government into the 21st Century, either with an Aldermanic system, or the City Manager form. Each would diversify the power base and give the people a greater voice. The old boys are willfully stymied- they continue to refuse to break the deadlock by either 1) going to the next highest vote getter in the last election or 2) holding an interim election, an option which could probably be arranged within 1 month. But then again, the people would have a voice.....so don't hold your breath.1 "

" Thank you, Lannie and Dog, for having the vision to see that Marion needs new blood, not a recycling of the same stale leadership that is has endured for years. Goss has been a source of controversy and a divisive figure for years in Marion and on the Courthouse Commission. He's the last thing we need on the commission. Hang tough, boys!!!!! "

" It appears the Council is having a power squabble. Goss a very long active Republican has been very politcally active for years helping re-elect the Mayor, Boyt, Connell, and Rix, but I do agree w/ Connell he is too old to serve. Actually they all are too old. If I remember correctly, there were two very qualified women running for a council seat, one with a highly qualifed business background, the other the Mayor's former City Clerk. Why hasn't the Mayor considered filling the position with one of them? We know the answer to that one, don't we. Perhaps the people should petition for a refrendum vote to change the City's form of government to Alderman form, for better government and people representation? Takes about 700 signatures from what I was told. Any takers on this proposal? The people should demand the Commissioner's seat be filled, and for myself I would like to see a woman on the council.
