Poshard meets with committee reviewing plagiarism allegations
BY Scott Fitzgerald, The Southern
Thursday, September 27, 2007 1:20 AM CDT
CARBONDALE - President Glenn Poshard met Wednesday with a special appointed committee at Southern Illinois University Carbondale that is reviewing allegations he plagiarized parts of his 1975 master's thesis and 1984 doctoral dissertation.

"This afternoon's discussion was productive and I deeply appreciated the opportunity to present my perspective. I look forward to the completion of the committee's work and remain focused on my work of advancing the interests of this university," Poshard said afterward in a prepared statement.

Wednesday's meeting was the second time the seven-member committee chosen from three major SIUC faculty groups has met this week, said SIUC spokesman Rod Sievers.

Although SIUC Chancellor Fernando Trevino had hoped publicly the committee would arrive at some conclusions and recommendations before the end of the month, it is likely they will continue reviewing the allegations through most of October, Sievers said.

"The chancellor said they could take all the time they needed," Sievers said.

Trevino said committee members also could seek outside consultation.

In a letter from Trevino to the committee shortly before they began meeting a few weeks earlier, the chancellor wrote a review of Poshard's work should be framed within "a historical and disciplinary context," Sievers said.

That meant the tenets of the 1975 and 1984 student codes of conduct addressing plagiarism would act as guidelines in the evaluation of Poshard's particular work.

Committee members also were given copies of a plagiarism report released a week earlier by a blue-ribbon committee that formed a year earlier at Poshard's urging to pinpoint a definition for plagiarism and to recommend a guideline to curb the dishonest practice at SIU.

" We've had FOX News, now Ann Coulter, can't be long until George Bush makes it into this list. Straight from the liberal playbook. "

" I find it very interesting that the Southern is suddenly so concerned with plagiarism after running Ann Coulter's column, which has been documented to have been plagiarized on several occasions. Why do you not care if columns in your paper are plagiarized, but are obsessed with the allegations against Poshard? "

" If an internal committee is supposed to be investigating an issue objectively, the last thing it should do is invite the object of inquiry (and their boss) to the proceedings BEFORE the findings emerge. This is another example of how ludicrous this entire process is. Why can there not be an outside body invited in? SIU Higher Administrators spend enough money when hiring their own choices (such as Poshard for President for $90,000 when he was the only candidate. This latest incident will again make SIU "the laughing stock of higher education." Although Glenn has support as a "local boy" the whole world is watching as it did in Chicago 1968. The question to ask is WHY is he so afraid to ask for an external body to review these allegations? "

" Why would they pick a committee of faculty when there are specialist all around the country in this field to look at this case and this would be over. This group of terrorist is ruining SIU. Give me a break, if you don't like your job at SIU, go somewhere else and leave SIU alone. Going back 25-30 years on someone is riduculous and the Board Of Trustees should have never allowed it for anyone. If I was Glenn Poshard I would have my attorney in place because his constitutional rights have broken. This whole witchhunt is a JOKE! "

I can't believe this but I am not surprised... wrote on Sep 27, 2007 1:12 PM:

The guidelines for plaiarism in 1975 and 1984 still say that NOT QUOTING A SOURCE IS PLAGIARISM>>>>>HELLOOOOOOOOO "

" What a waste of time. Banjo Man already knows the answer. Give Banjo five minutes and guys like him could solve the worlds problems. It would be in the best interest of the university to wrap this thing up quickly. I wonder what Banjo wrote his disertation on? "

" Did Glenn bring along a banjo so he could sing folk songs to the committee detailing how the big bad guys are out to get him? Blue ribbon committee, haha, don't make me laugh. The only Blue ribbon this bunch will need is the kind you drink. What would be wrong with having an outside independent group do this? What are you all fearing here? "
