Grounded: No flights from Marion to Vegas
BY JOHN D. HOMAN, The Southern
Friday, November 9, 2007 9:42 PM CST
MARION - Williamson County Regional Airport officials rolled the dice with Allegiant Air but have come up snake eyes in their quest to provide transportation to and from Las Vegas.

Allegiant Air announced Friday it would terminate service - before it ever began.

The airline was already booking trips and was scheduled to conduct flights Mondays and Fridays in February. Anyone who has made reservations will receive a full refund.

"This is certainly frustrating news," said Doug Kimmel, Williamson County Regional Airport manager. "We put forth a lot of effort to accommodate Allegiant. A lot of improvements were made."

Some of those improvements, he said, were an expanded parking lot and an expanded baggage claim area and holding room.

"It's about a $200,000 investment, but at least those improvements are in place for the next airline," Kimmel said.

Allegiant officials cited rising fuel costs as a key reason for the airline canceling its service to Williamson County and several other communities.

"Unfortunately, due to escalating fuel costs, we will not begin service from Marion to Las Vegas," Maurice J. Gallagher, Allegiant Air president and CEO, said. "We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers. We greatly appreciate the support the community and the airport's management team have shown us."

Friday also marked the final day of air service from Williamson County to Chicago courtesy of Mesa Airlines in Phoenix. Only air service to St. Louis remains. There are two flights a day through Great Lakes Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyo.

"If there is a silver lining, it's that an airline like Allegiant did have interest in us and someone else will again," Kimmel said.

" Furthermore, until recently, the Air Traffic Control Tower at Williamson County Airport was fully funded by the Federal Government. Because Mr. Kimmel has not enforced the agreement with Aeroflight, and Aeroflight does not provide the services of the agreement, air traffic at Williamson County Airport is down 60% in the last few years and now the taxpayers of Williamson County pay approximately $80,000 to operate the air traffic control tower. It is time for the taxpayers to demand change at Williamson County Airport. "

" Local flyer sounds like my good friend J.D. Once again, Williamson County Airport Manager, Doug Kimmel dropped the ball and it will cost the taxpayers $200,000. Mesa came to Williamson County after Kimmel ran off the previous carrier who had been very reliable for several years. Mr Kimmel wanted Great Lakes Air, operated by a personal friend of his, to get the service from Williamson County. When Great Lakes could not provide a plane for the route, the service went to Mesa. Anyone with any knowledge of how it works knew Mesa would only last as long as the state subsidies lasted. Again, Kimmel went to his friend at Great Lakes and they now have the flight to St. Louis operating as Lakes Air. However, before you book a flight with Lakes Air, keep in mind that there is only one aircraft dedicated to the St. Louis/Marion run. One airplane. If it is down for Maintenenace, your flight will be cancelled. How could Kimmel lay out $200,000 in taxpayers money without a binding agreement with Allegiant? Why would the airport spend that kind of money for a business that was going to take money out of Southern Illinois to be gambled at Las Vegas? I would rather people spend their money at the local riverboats where the money at least remains mostly in Illinois. To be continued "

" I have had problems with the airport's Airline to Midway. Mesa left my wife stranded in chicago. They called me at home and said they we going to cease operations and I need to make arangements to pick my wife up in Chicago. When Mesa first started flying out of Marion, they offered a promotional fare. But they refused to give it to me, because they said we only reserve 2 or 3 seats for that fare and they were already taken on the flight i was suppose fly on. Yet they still advertised it as if it was for any seat. Mesa didnt last very long. I am also one who bought me and my wife a ticket to Las vegas. Now they are canceling???? I understand the Marion Airport now has a flight to St louis. I wonder how long it will be before people start having problems with them. I will never fly out of Marion Airport. I will drive to St Louis.. It seems to me that the Airport would check these Airlines out before they spend $200,000 dollars. with gas prices unsteady. You would think the aiport would ask the airline if rising fuel prices would effect there promise to fly out of Marion before they spent $200,000 OF TAX PAYERS DOLLARS. "
