Coulterville man dead after ATV accident
By Bethany Krajelis, The Southern

POMONA - A Wednesday night crime spree in rural Pomona resulted in the death of 23-year-old Nicholas Solt-Bryd and the filing of theft charges against his roommate.

Jackson County Sgt. Dave Nichols said Solt-Byrd was originally from Coulterville, but living with David Hostalek, 19, on Hickory Ridge Road in Pomona. Solt-Bryd's death and Hostlek's arrest were two separate incidents, he said.

A Hickory Ridge Road resident called the sheriff's department at about 8 p.m. Wednesday after seeing a vehicle crash and the driver flee. The crashed 2002 Kia had been reported stolen earlier that night in Murphysboro, Nichols said.

By 8:30 p.m., another area resident reported that his 1998 pickup truck had been stolen out of his driveway. Police searched the rural roads for the vehicle, which was found in the area sometime later. Nichols said shortly after 11:30 p.m., deputies arrested Hostalek on charges of theft by possession and leaving the scene of an accident stemming from the Kia crash.

He would not release what led police to Hostalek or where he was arrested. He did say during the search for the pickup truck, police came across a wrecked Pontiac Sunfire near Cedar Creek Bridge. That abandoned vehicle was registered to Hostalek, Nichols said.

At about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Nichols said a deputy found a wrecked 4-wheel vehicle in the Hickory Ridge Road area. Police reported that the driver, Solt-Byrd, was found near the crash scene, badly injured. He was taken to St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary evidence suggests the 4-wheeler, which a Hickory Ridge Road resident reported stolen Wednesday night, struck a large boulder at a high rate of speed, Nichols said. The sheriff's department, state police and the county coroner are continuing to investigate the incidents.

Nichols said the vehicles are being processed for physical evidence and there is the possibility of more charges. Hostalek is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 7 on a Class 3 felony theft charge, according to the Jackson County court Web site.

Solt-Bryd, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling and motorcycling riding, is survived by his parents, grandmother, three brothers, family, friends and his dog, Lola. Visitation and funeral services for the Coulterville native are scheduled to take place this weekend.

" To all the Byrd family. I am David Hostalek's Father. I Happened upon this article only a couple days ago. All of what happened had been kept from me. I am truly and deeply sorry for your tragic loss. As a young man of 18, I lost my older brother in an accident. He too, was my Mother's oldest son. It totally devestated my family. I am sure there is no greater pain in life, than that of a Mother who has lost her child. I agree that any who feel they need to judge Nick by the things that happened that night are foolish and inconsiderarate. Some of us get a little wild in our youth. Some of us survive and some don't. I for one don't know how I did. Why God decides to bring one his children to him at such an early age is beyond my understanding. I beleve that God judges us by the love that dwells within us. Not by the things we have done in human weakness, in this confusing world where dark forces abide and work to steal our very soul. I hope your family can share the good memories you all have of Nick. I hope that with each holiday season remember him fondly and as the years go by you heal of this tragedy. My experience in my own family is, it takes a long time and the pain never is gone completely. May God bless you. "

" This is Nicks sister and my family and I are wondering if anyone knows anything that happened that night please get in contact with my family (coulterville). This ad in the paper is not correct at all and we just want the real answers and details just for closure and for my brother..he would want us to know. "

" I am Nick's sister and my family and I are dealing with a lot right now so thank you to the people who understand our loss and know that people do make mistakes. To those of you who posted comments about my brother, that was very juvenile and obviously you have never lost anyone that was as close to you as my brother was to me and my family. Keep saying those things and it will come back to you someday. I have a 6 month old daughter who I love with all my heart and no matter what she did I will still love her, no matter what! Nick, my brother, not only left this world with a niece that he loved dearly who will never get to remember her uncle, but also left his 3 brothers and sister, his mom, dad, and the rest of his family. Not only that, his friends which to him was also his family, his dog Lola and 9 puppies that were just born, but also all the people whos lives he touched. Our mom is so upset and can hardly function right now because she just lost her baby boy, her first born, her everything, and all yall want to say is tuff luck, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Go through this one time and then tell me how you really feel. You people really disgust me knowing there are people out there like you!!!! "

" Well said Savanah. Tuff Luck I hope I'm not around when you fall. Forest some day I hope you see through the trees. The saying what comes around goes around comes to mind so remember being heartless will come back to you. No matter the circumstances someone will always hurt at a time like this, no matter what some one has done or hasn't done at a time like this death is hard no matter what. "

" Sorry tuff luck and forrest, I didn't realize that the friends and family of Nick shouldn't be grieving. I mean come on, all of us perfect people have never made a mistake or a bad decision. I would never wish the feelings that we are going through on anyone, but maybe one day you'll lose someone you love to "tuff luck" or a "stupid" decision and you'll see just how juvenile your comment seems to someone dealing with this loss. "

" I guess "Nick was great" right up to the point he crashed the stolen ATV he was riding. So much for greatness. Reminds me of all the other "he was such a good kid" serving time in Fed Prisons and laying in the graveyards. I hate to be blunt but, What is so great about stealing? And if he wasn't involved in the theft of the ATV he was guilty of theft by possession!!! "
