Herrin pharmacy makes all its own medication

HERRIN - NaturalMed Apothecary Inc. takes a hands-on approach to filling prescriptions; they make them all themselves.

The pharmacy takes raw chemicals or nutrients in powder form and works with the patient and practitioner to optimize the effect of the medicine. Erik Cornett, resident pharmacist and owner of NaturalMed, said the pharmacy provides a service that's not common in the area.

"We're giving an opportunity in health care that is not readily available," Cornett said. "What we provide is a unique approach to health care by providing modern-day medicine and alternative medicines."

In addition to offering medicines in capsule form, the pharmacy also liquefies medicine and creates topical gels. It also practices with bio-identical hormone replacement, which derives from yam or soy plants to remedy deficient hormone levels.

The pharmacy opened in May and has its own lab, named after pharmacist William H. Clark, where Cornett and Michele Billingsley, certified pharmacy technician, make the medicine. Billingsley, who worked in the pharmacy at Marion Memorial Hospital, said she enjoys working at NaturalMed because of the connection with the patient and the feeling of accomplishment that comes from helping them.

"It's more relaxing and it's more rewarding because you know you're helping the patient," Billingsley said.

The lab shares its space with Natural Med Herbals, a business owned by Cornett and naturopathic physician Todd Pierson, which offers natural vitamins and supplements. Cornett also plans to operate another business called Liquid Potions, which he owns with pharmacist Gerad Harsy. The company specializes in converting medicines to liquid and will launch its first product next year.

Cornett said that so far, business has been good and is increasing thanks to word of mouth. He said his favorite part is being able to do something different than most pharmacies.

"I've just enjoyed the fact that there's an alternative to counting out pills and to give another choice to the patient for health care," Cornett said.
