Put an end to torture

To the Editor:

In reference to Mona Charen's column of Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, if any Democrats are fighting against torture, I'm for them. If any Republicans are fighting against torture, I'm for them.

This country is the only one I want to live in. Anyone who says waterboarding is not torture is mistaken.

To think anyone in a government position would defend it offends me.

Mona Charen does not know for sure what goes on now, or what went on before, at Guantanamo so I thank Sen. Richard Durbin and any other government official who fights against torture of any human being.

If the CIA destroyed any tapes, I'll bet they had something on them they didn't want an average American or anyone else to see!

State needs a change

To the Editor:

Is there any real doubt that the legal capital of Illinois is Springfield and that it will remain so until such time as the legislature should decide to move it? We have a governor who seems to think the capital is Chicago because that is where he wants to live. He also thinks taxpayers should cover his commuting costs while we maintain an executive mansion and staff for him in Springfield. This situation is a classic example of why we need to amend the state constitution to allow for a recall vote on the position of governor.

While we are amending constitutions it would be nice to have a similar provision in the U. S. constitution for the president. Combining such basic changes with term limits for all legislative positions in both state and federal governments might go a long way toward curing a lot of our government problems.

" Could someone tell me why we , referring to the population of Southern Illinois, should care about what the gov. is wanting to do with mass transit in the Chicago area ? When was the last time the gov. actually did something or at least pretended to do something about this part of the state ?I find it utterly disgusting. People are really hurting around here. Jobs are few and far between. Oh yes, we hear all kinds of pipedreams about a few hundred jobs that are coming.....only to be applied for by a few thousand people. Foreigners coming in and taking jobs from us.......yes people I said it, now what? Someone should have said something along time ago. If you want to live here, let's start with.....oh yes, becoming a citizen....following it up with learning to speak english.....obeying our laws......... and I could go on and on. So Mr. Gov.......why don't you do some cutting budgets in let's say ...Cook County.........see how many jobs are readily available in the Windy City..............see how many people who are not citizens are gainfully employed around there ? I used to make fun of the idea of ILlinois being divided into two states..........I glady welcome the idea now.........Springfield can be the southern part of North Illinois. I can guarantee you that there will be more done for South ILlinois than anyone could ever imagine. Hope you get alot of sleep at night Gov Rod because a whole lot of folks can't for worrying about electric bills, medical bills, school tuition..........oh yes, and let's not forget the piddly things such as food and gasoline costs. " I would just like to say thank you to Illinois State Police Officer Paul Moak for his assistance in a accident Sunday afternoon on Interstate 57 N near the Johnston City exit. My husband and I were returning to our home near Bonnie when a herd of deer crossed the Interstate and we were unable to miss them. Officer Moak arrived to assist us and was very helpful and kind. He put us at ease and stayed with us until every thing was taken care of. Officer Moak is certainly an asset to the Illinois State Police and we are very grateful to him! "
