Tow truck business owner receives proper escort after passing away
BY BECKY MALKOVICH, THE SOUTHERN
Wednesday, January 9, 2008 11:02 PM CST
BENTON - Given the amount of time Kenneth Abbott spent in his tow truck since founding Abbott's Towing in 1977, it was only fitting that his truck was used to deliver him to his final resting place.

After Abbott died Saturday, his family followed his wishes and planned a goodbye that would pay tribute to his many years in the business.

After a service Wednesday morning, his casket was placed on an Abbott's Towing flatbed and a procession of area tow trucks and police cars escorted the truck from a Benton funeral home to a cemetery in Logan.

"He would have loved it," said West City Police Chief Steve Mumbower, who worked closely with Abbott for almost a decade. "This was his life."

Mumbower said Abbott was a dedicated worker and a good man.

"He was always there for you," Mumbower said. "Kenny would do things for you no one else would. You could call him from Fairview Heights at 3 a.m. and he'd come help you. He was one of a kind. He will be missed."

Former West City Mayor Bill Thomas said Abbott was a hard worker who was more often seen in the truck than out, especially during the business' infancy.

"In the early days he ran the business himself and he was in the truck pretty much all the time," Thomas said. "He was a funny and outgoing guy who would cause you to like him."

Sharon Taylor rode in the procession in the Neibch Towing wrecker.

"This was his profession and it seems right that people who work in the same profession honor him this way," she said. "He was a really nice guy who would do anything for you."

" Just his charater! He never changed. Even after his death, he still makes me laugh and lifted my spirit. I can see his big funny smile, just less teeth now, like me. There are not many people left in this world that was like Mr. Abbott. I too remember Mr. Kenny Abbott as a funny nice gentleman. He was always respectful and kind to all that was around. When I was in my early 20's, going to college, working, and a single mother, my car would become disabled alot. Eventhough I got to know him, but not my best terms, I found him to be conforting, as a father figure. I would call him and knew that he was trust worthy. He would pick me and my baby up and a number of times he'd give me breaks on towling and repairing payments. Sometimes trusting me to pay the rest later. And I did. His kind humble spirit, with that sweet funny smile, always knew what to say and do to put some light in my life and lifing my broken down spirits. I worked in the office, at the Gray Plaza Motel, where I was able to take my son to work with me, and he would come there to get cars and stop in and ask how me and the baby were doing. He always showed to be a loving patience father, grandfather, and devoted husband as well. I guess he is still telling us that he is broke down now but still has the spirit to lift us up, and not to worry. I know that he was a wise man and has many treasures in heaven. My prayers are with the family, God has bless them with a True Love to follow after. "

" My thoughts and prayers to the Abbott family. The first time I met Mr. Abbott he treated me as family, as does his son. Mr. Abbott will be missed, but, his family will carry on as he would have wanted. "
