Do away with anti-gun nonsense

To the Editor:

Did you know that an Illinois resident who meets the background requirements and is employed at a full-time occupation in Indiana may apply for and receive a personal protection weapons permit? Only two states do not issue law-abiding citizens a personal protection permit - Wisconsin and Illinois.

How does Illinois allow its citizens to protect themselves? For women, the Illinois State Police suggests they carry a nail file, rat-tailed comb or use car keys to ward off an attacker. I'm sure that method would work equally well for disabled persons or the aged.

Ask yourself what chance of physical protection any woman with a nail file has against a 200-pound male attacker. The Park District Police in the state capital are handing out free whistles people can use to call for help if they're attacked. The plastic whistles come in bright yellow, red, blue or green. Park District Police Chief George Judd said he hopes potential attackers "see the whistles and are scared off." Every day, Illinois citizens are raped, murdered, mugged, stabbed, robbed, shot and beaten with no means to protect themselves or their loved ones from criminals.

Illinois needs to get its head out of 1960s utopia-land. Criminals do not care about laws that come out of Springfield. It's time to do away with this anti-gun nonsense and pass HB1304 as a personal protection weapon "shall issue" permit process in Illinois.

Hatfield is an inspiration

To the Editor:

Thank you for your coverage on Ashley Hatfield. Ashley is an example of what can be accomplished by proper attitude, determination and hard work. Like the rest in our community, I have watched Ashley grow up from a cute little girl to a very beautiful young lady. She has excelled in anything that she has attempted. She also serves as an inspiration to other young people throughout Southern Illinois. Let Ashley be your example of what can be obtained if you do not set a limit on your aspirations.

" Hey Kevin, you need to get out more. I work in many "carry" states, and the shoot-em-up scenarios you fear just aren’t there. "

" People in IL will not be allowed to protect themselves until a successful lawsuit by victims families takes place against the state, county and/or city where a person capable of protecting themself with a firearm was denied to do so. There's definetly a precident for people being allowed CCW in all the states except for 2. "

" The Peoples Republic of Illinois has decreed that only its officials and the criminal element will carry fire arms. Dear fellow peons, as long as we keep electing representatives that don't represent our interests, the only option for us is to bend over and smile. "

" Well, just think of how much more exciting road rage would be if everyone was packing heat?

I can see it now. . .self-defense will be defined as "He went through that four-way stop out of turn and I'm late for work." Or how about. .. "I didn't know he was walking up to me to ask for directions - he looked threatening to me."

Are any guns ever discharged and kill someone by mistake? And how much safer do we make a society by providing weapon carry privileges for people who write newspapers and declare certain other people should be killed, bombed, executed, etc? Has there ever been a case in this country where someone has been murdered by vigilante justice? "

" I agree with the concealed carry permits as much as the next guy but there needs to be a required training course to prove you are proficiant with the handling and accuracy of the gun before you are allowed to carry it. As a police officer I can say that being forced to draw a weapon is very stressfull and even with all the years of training and rounds I have tossed down range I would say Im only slightly better skilled at protecting my own a**.. I just think the average joe would crumble under pressure and could cause more harm than good. Something to think about... But I fully support concealed carry and I never leave home without mine... "

" Kudos to Michael for bringing up the issue of conceal carry in Illinois. I currently have a conceal carry permit from Pennsylvania that allows me, an Illinois citizen, to carry in 20 states. But, when I am in Illinois, I have to unload and put my gun back in the case. Do you think the criminals follow this law? Wake up people, especially the Chicago sheep, tell your legislators to allow you to protect yourself. "

Plastic Whistles v. Steel Guns wrote on Feb 6, 2008 9:27 AM:

" The reason Illinoisans have to defend themselves with plastic whistles--against guns made of steel--is because our so called anti-gun laws are courtesy of a plastic-for-brains legislative body. And if we can be honest with ourselves, is not the term "anti-gun" is a left-of-center euphemism for "pro-criminal/anti-citizen"? Being that I’m just short of my 70th birthday, and not as strong and fast as I used to be, I now pack heat both in my auto and in my home—and I VERY MUCH RESENT our legislators for placing me in this awkward position. "

" Re: Do Away with Anti-Gun Nonsense.

The idea of handing out free bright yellow, red, blue or green whistles so people can use to call for help if they're attacked is a very good idea. Now, all we need is for our über-bright Illinois legislators to pass a law demanding that all felons use only bright yellow, red, blue or green plastic guns and knives.
