Williamson schools receive first sales tax payment
BY JOHN D. HOMAN, The Southern
Friday, October 10, 2008 11:14 PM CDT
MARION - Regional Superintendent of Schools Matt Donkin presented five Williamson County school superintendents with their first payment from proceeds raised from the new 1 percent countywide sales tax.

Based on school enrollment, Marion received the largest stipend at $210,667.93. Herrin was awarded $124,148.17; Carterville got $88,209.20; Johnston City was given $63,993.90; and Crab Orchard received $22,935.41.

Smaller amounts were awarded to neighboring school districts that serve a handful of Williamson County residents in towns such as Galatia, Carrier Mills-Stonefort, New Simpson Hill, Giant City, Carbondale and West Frankfort.

Donkin said the tax went into effect July 1 and that payments would be awarded quarterly by the state. A final total of $517,429.10 was collected in this first quarterly payment.

Donkin added that Williamson County made history as the first county in the state to approve a sales tax increase strictly for the purpose of building new schools and retiring old school debt.

Carterville Superintendent Tim Bleyer said voters made it clear in February that they wanted schools to benefit from the tax, because they want to see new schools built where they are needed the most.

Carterville plans to build a new high school; Marion plans to build a new elementary school in Creal Springs.

"We guarantee that every penny will be used wisely, efficiently and effectively," Bleyer said.

" He is still Ozment in my book. This is not the first state to put this tax on a ballot, This was the first county in Illinois and it will not be the last that will pass. You certainly CANNOT rely on Springfield to pass a Capital Plan thanks to Mr Bradley and Madigan. Heck, I am getting where I cannot even tell them apart they are such buddies and the bad thing is Bradley is being led around by Madigan and just being used. The bottom line is the people have spoken. The bottom line is Marion wants to get their hands in the money. "

" First of all why don't you get your facts straight it is Osman not Ozment!! If you truly are not that informed that you can not even spell the names correctly than of course you would not know all the facts in the case and if you sat down and had it explained to you, you would see that problem with the tax..And if it was amended correctly everyone would benefit from it! " I can honestly say I love it seeing this money being distributed. I really didn't care one way or another on the tax I did vote for it for our kids. However, the funny part is this is a set up from Butler and Ozment. Why, because Butlers daughter got dismissed as a teacher at Marion School. I hope the judge tosses this ridiculous lawsuit
after all the people have SPOKEN. I might add that Marion extended TIF for 12 yrs for Mr Ozment, hmmm interesting. "

" This money is indeed being used for Creal School. The design plans are complete and requests for consstruction should should be on the street sometime within the next month. Creal is the first priority of the district. Construction should begin very soon. "

" Is none of this tax money going to Creal Springs school or is the
new school plans just a thing of the past and they have, once again, been
passed over. "
